At Mt Zion, we are joyfully growing disciples in Christ. One of the marks of discipleship is Service, here at Mt Zion and beyond.
This month, one of the places we served was at Alice's Garden. Venice R. Williams, the executive director and educator was there, and she asked that we turn the soil on a plot and remove weeds, stones, etc. to prepare it for planting decorative corn and two kinds of beans. Venice also gave us a brief history of the Garden when we arrived, which has been around for more than half a century. As Venice told Fox News, "It’s sanctuary. It’s a safe space. It’s for everyone who wants to enjoy the beauty and the magic of this city."
Last month, the youth went to Mr. Bob's Under the Bridge, a ministry that provides clothing and more to people who are experiencing homelessness. Especially useful items we distributed included shoes, blankets, and baby clothes.
A favorite service opportunity for Mt Zion is Tosa Cares, the food pantry we host. Though numerous people from Mt Zion are involved at Tosa Cares, thanks to Pastor Tyler everyone in the congregation has a regular chance to serve. Pastor has claimed a Saturday every 6-week rotation as Mt Zion's Saturday, so that all those who are unable to volunteer more regularly can still serve. Many people who have never been able to serve at Tosa Cares before have gotten to help make a difference.
Soon we'll be celebrating "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday. This is an event across the ELCA encouraging all Lutherans to join together in one massive day of service. If every Lutheran across the country all served together on the same day, how much difference could we make? Will you consider serving with us on Saturday, September 9th?
